A dental filling can sometimes be used to repair a single surface cavity or some other type of physical defect in a tooth’s enamel layer. This special dental material relies on the surrounding tooth enamel to help hold in place to effectively repair the tooth and restore its basic function in your mouth.

If a new cavity or chip develops on a nearby surface of the tooth, there might not be sufficient healthy enamel remaining to secure a second dental filling. To effectively treat a case like this a dentist like Dr. Pete Nathe might recommend a dental crown restoration.

This often requires two appointments to fully replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a special dental material. The first session calls for removing any existing tooth enamel, as well as the existing dental filling. This leaves behind an abutment comprising the dentin and other core structures of the tooth.

A detailed impression will be taken of the abutment before a temporary crown is secured in place. The impression will be sent to a professional dental lab where your dental crown will be created.

You will need to return to Yakima Smiles to have the dental crown cemented directly onto the abutment. This will complete the dental restoration process.

If you live in Yakima, Washington, and you have a previously repaired tooth with a new cavity or chip in the tooth enamel you shouldn’t delay in calling (509) 941-2957 to have it treated by Dr. Pete Nathe and his staff.
